Healthcare Healthcare On the frontlines of the COVID-19 pandemic are our healthcare providers. At the beginning of April 2020, more than 870,000 cases and over 43,000 deaths have been reported worldwide. In developing countries, COVID-19 cases are rapidly rising and Healthcare systems everywhere are crumbling under the pressure. As regional governments are tackling overburdened healthcare systems and increasingly fragile economies, there is a need for a multi-sectoral response to problems posed by COVID-19. The way in which primary care is provided and received is transforming in response to the pandemic. In many cases, healthcare providers are struggling to manage the volume of COVID-19 patients needing critical care. In countries like Singapore and South Korea, digital solutions have been adopted to assist with testing and contact tracing of patients with the virus. Innovations like these show us that by anticipating the needs of our healthcare systems, we can find sustainable answers through software applications. Business & Commerce Business & Commerce Businesses from various industries such as entertainment have been negatively impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic. Several businesses have had to close their operations and at best retain minimal staff. Many businesses have also allowed many of their staff to work from home which is unfamiliar territory for some. Business owners are searching for creative solutions to problems they will face reopening after the pandemic or problems they are facing to stay open despite the pressure many of them under now. Commerce is also being affected by the pandemic as consumers are reallocating their funds to different industries amid the crisis. For example, car sales have plunged in the United States and China. World trade is also in trouble. According to the World Trade Organization, global trade could fall between 13% and 32%. Director-General of the World Trade Organization Roberto Azevedo described the numbers as “ugly”. A website has already been established to track e-commerce activities in several countries in Europe, North America, Africa, and other regions. This was done in an effort to provide insight between e-commerce activity before, during after the pandemic. Food & Water Security Food & Water Security As COVID-19 spreads, many regions are faced with a global crisis that has the potential to shut down the cargo ports in the different countries, if it hasn’t already. This is likely to affect shipping lines, global supply chains, exporters abroad and importers domestically. Between 80 and 90 per cent of all food consumed within the Caribbean region (in the amount of about $6 billion according to the latest numbers) for instance, originates from foreign countries, such as the United States, creating greater uncertainty between the months of June to November when there are elevated risks of hurricanes. Within the upcoming weeks and months, as key fruits and vegetables come into season, short ripening times and perishability will be compounded by reduced labour, both locally and internationally. Additionally, social media is already buzzing with videos of panic buying, food shortages and price gouging in different parts of the world. Creative Industry Creative Industry In an effort to curb the spread of the Coronavirus and to not overwhelm our healthcare systems, schools have closed, mass gatherings have been postponed, and we are all working from home while we are either in self-quarantine or self-isolation. Additionally, arts institutions are closed and cultural events have been cancelled leaving performing artists and other creatives out of work. It’s not just musicians feeling the pressure though, dance schools have cancelled classes and photographers, who rely on the busy events season for a significant portion of their income, are seeing their work dry up. As theatres begin to close, the industry's many contract workers face financial losses. Tourism Tourism Imposed travel bans, cancelled cruises and airplane flights, and closed hotels are damaging the all-important tourism industry throughout the Caribbean. Countries in the Caribbean, Africa, and the Pacific have postponed their annual carnival celebrations and conferences; some countries remain closed to visitors. The Spanish hotel chain RIU, which owns several hotels in Jamaica, said: “We are facing an unprecedented situation that requires us to take exceptional measures.” In the Caribbean for instance, tourism accounts for more than 15% of their annual gross domestic product and the pressure is imminent. Governance & Rule of Law Governance & Rule of Law Governments are at the forefront of the COVID-19 pandemic response and their involvement will mean the difference between life and death especially for the most vulnerable in the societies they govern. The ability to restore normalcy is squarely based on a government’s competence in developing meaningful policies and maintaining the rule of law to ensure public safety. Creativity and innovation are needed in the judicial system now more than ever. With social distancing recommended and enforced, the judicial system now has to rethink traditional practices such as having 12 jurors in a box. Almost 100 federal courts across the USA have closed and subsequently delayed trials. However, what cannot be paused or delayed is the transparency of government, maintenance of the rule of law by the government and the fight to prevent corruption. CCHOOSE A TRACK FEATURED
